City: Lagos city hall reopens after renovations
Monday, February 8th 2010The historic city hall on Lagos Island, the seat of the secretariat of the Lagos Island local government authority, is back in use after a restoration costing N5.2 billion.
Built in 1968 as the seat of the then Lagos city council, the building was badly damaged by fire in 1997 and subsequently abandoned. In 2007 then governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, contracted a local construction company to restore and modernise the building with a view to turning it into a historical and tourist attraction.
The “new-look” city hall boasts 85 offices, bank facilities, a banquet hall, air conditioning, parking for 130 vehicles, a back-up power supply and underground water storage tanks for firefighting purposes among other things.
The facility will now be managed on behalf of the local authorities by a team of consultants who will oversee bookings, usage, maintenance and security on and around the premises. It is already slated to host a local beauty pageant and gala dinner on 3 April.
