Culture: Lagos to protect cultural sites
Sunday, January 24th 2010This Day online reports that a bill is to be put in place in the Lagos metropolitan area and state to halt the demolition of culturally significant sites.
Deputy chief whip of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Lola Akande, called current destruction ‘indiscriminate’ at a public hearing on a bill to provide for protection, preservation and restoration of historical properties and cultural heritage sites.
Permanent secretary for the ministry of tourism and inter-governmental relations, Ashamu Fadipe, said that the introduction of the bill would finally halt the destruction of much cultural heritage that was entirely driven by money. The ministers called for proper heritage documentation and a public information website.
