Transport: Lagos to expand bus rapid transit scheme

Local transport operator Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced plans to expand the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) scheme in the city.

Part of the project is to increase the speed of the express bus system with dedicated lanes so that it can carry around 60,000 passengers a day instead of the current 220,000.

Under the plans the existing 22-km BRT corridor from CMC on Lagos Island in the south to Mile 12 will be extended as far as Ikorodu town north of Lagos Lagoon, where many commuters live. LAMATA says preliminary work for the extension has been completed and work on the new infrastructure is due to start this year.

Opened in March 2008, the BRT is part of plans to improve public transportation for the state’s 17.5 million inhabitants and reduce traffic congestion. LAMATA is also overseeing the development of a light railway and a ferry service.
