Health: Lagos hospital reforms
Saturday, January 9th 2010Boards of governors have been introduced at 12 public hospitals and health facilities in Lagos to improve public health care in the state. Until now the hospitals have been run directly by the state government.
The Gbagada, Lagos, Ifako-Ijaiye, Apapa, Alimosho, Agbowa, Isolo and Epe general hospitals, Massey Street Children’s Hospital, Lagos Island Maternity Hospital and Ebute-Metta and Onikan health centres are now run by an eight-member board comprising a retired doctor, nurse and pharmacist, the medical director of the hospital concerned, the medical health officer in the relevant local government area, two members of the local community and a private sector participant.
The boards will be in charge of the day-to-day running of the hospital and liaising with government health departments with the aim of improving hospital services and making them more efficient.
