Politics: President Yar’Adua health concern
Tuesday, December 15th 2009Pressure is mounting on Nigeria’s president Umaru Yar’Adua to resign from office amid growing concerns about the state of his health.
The president is currently in hospital in Saudi Arabia, where he is being treated for acute pericarditis, an inflammation of the membrane around the heart. The Nigerian ambassador to Saudi Arabia has said in a statement that no date has been set for his return.
This is not the first time Yar’Adua has sought medical treatment since taking office in 2007, leading to calls from newspapers and public figures for him to step down or allow a panel of doctors to establish whether he is fit to govern. However the president has the full backing of the cabinet and of vice president Goodluck Jonathan, who is overseeing government business in his absence.
