Transport: Nigeria to restore Lagos-Jebba rail link
Tuesday, November 10th 2009The Nigerian government has signed a N12.3 billion contract with a Chinese company to rehabilitate the 488 km railway between Lagos and Jebba to the north. The project is part of renewed efforts to revamp the country’s 3,500 km narrow gauge rail network to take pressure off the country’s roads.
The rehabilitation is to be carried out by the China Civil Engineering and Construction Company and should take ten months to complete. Work includes installing a new signal and telecommunications system along the line.
Located on the southern bank of the river Niger in Kwara state in western Nigeria, Jebba is an important port as well as a road and rail centre.
In a related development national railway operator Nigerian Railway Corporation has said it has ordered 25 new locomotives from General Electric (GE) and that 120 coaches and wagons are undergoing refurbishing.
