27 Feb 2010. This exhibition, entitled Whip Not Child, brings together paintings, photographs, video documentaries and the spoken word on the theme of child abuse in Nigeria. Artists Chidi Kwubiri, Mike Onoighe, Felicia Inyang Ema, Uche J. Iroha and Ade Bantu have been asked to reflect on this distressing subject. In addition, Kwubiri and Omoighe, the facilitators of the project, have organised a series of workshops at schools in Lagos, the results of which are displayed along with the artists’ work. The exhibition starts at 15.00. more

21 Feb 2010. This concert features the London-based Nigerian soprano, concert artist and recitalist Victoria Oruwari, accompanied on the piano by Tunde Sosan. Oruwari started singing as a child and performed at numerous events in Nigeria and England. In 2001 she was admitted to London’s Trinity College of Music, where she graduated in music. Oruwari currently teaches singing at Acton High School and Edward Wilson Primary School and she also writes songs. more

The Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA), Lagos launches the year-long programme On Independence and the Ambivalence of Promise marking the 50th anniversary of independence of Nigeria and 16 other African countries with a month-long international art photography residency programme featuring local and international artists, critics and curators. 6 Feb 2010. Twenty-two of Africa’s leading fashion designers are to present their work in the final of M-Net’s Face of Africa 2010 model search. Top international names to look out for include Kofi Ansah from Ghana, John Kaveke from Kenya and David Tlale from South Africa, Anna Getaneh from Ethiopia, Anisa Mpungwe from Tanzania, Gloria WavaMunno from Uganda, Chakirra Claasen from Namibia, Cathy Kathunzi from Malawi, Koketso Chiepe from Botswana, Liz Ogumbo from Kenya, Taibo Bacar from Mozambique and Angela Mulenga from Zambia. In addition the top ten finalists in the modelling competition will be dressed by as many Nigerian designers - Zizi Cardow, Frank Osodi, Odio Mimonet, Fati Asibelua Momo, Folake Folarin-Coker, Ituen Basi, Adebayo Jones, Lanre Da Silva-Ajayi, Lisa Folawiyo and Yemi Osunkova - in a presentation of the finest Nigerian haute couture. 10-14 Feb 2010. Terra Kulture celebrates Nigeria’s 50th anniversary of independence, which took place on 1 Oct 1960, with an auction of items representing over 2,000 years of African creativity. Up for auction are over 50 masterpieces of African art including paintings, sculptures and other images from the Nok, Ife and Benin cultures and other ancient populations from the Niger area as well as from today’s contemporary art production. The auction preview takes place from 10 to 13 Feb from 09.00-21.00. The auction takes place on 14 Feb at 16.00. more

12 Dec 2009. The Goethe-Institut presents a comprehensive book on transforming and reshaping public space through art in Lagos. The publication offers a wide overview of two art projects in Lagos led by Emeka Udemba and carried out by Nigerian and German artists. The first intervention, entitled Lagos Open, was realised in 2005 and involved an entire street in the suburb of Ajegunle, while the second, In God We Trust, from 2008, artistically re-interpreted two churches in Mushin. These projects deal with contemporary social and religious issues related to daily life in Lagos. Event starts at 16.00. more
