The third edition of this international show features 400 works at 34 galleries in Lagos as well as seminars, workshops and debates on patronage of the contemporary visual arts in Nigeria, the artist-gallery relationship, the importance of the curator and cultural journalism. The expo, which takes place in August each year, is organised by the Art Galleries' Association of Nigeria and is sponsored by the National Gallery of Art. more


IRWIN: Towards a Double Consciousness

26 – 31 July 2010. Slovenian artist collective IRWIN present Towards a Double Consciousness: NSK Passport Project, a two week long series of screenings, lectures and panel discussions. IRWIN, all members of NSK (New Slovenian Art) have collaborated with Nigerian artists to realise a joint project known as State in Time, which examines the use of media and technology in traditional art. The event forms part of The Centre for Contemorary Art (CCA) year long festivities marking 50 years of independence. Participants include Dr Inke Arns, Miran Mohar, Borut Vogelnik and Jelili Atiku. 30 July 2010. The Nigerian Afrobeat singer-songwriter and instrumentalist Lagbaja performs live on stage at his club Motherland in Lagos. Known as the masked musician (Lagbaja is a Yoruba word meaning somebody, nobody, anybody or everybody) and for the acrobatic choreography of his concerts, recently Lagbaja has been performing extensively worldwide and has not played in Lagos for a long time. Here he is expected to thrill his fans with his sax appeal and vocal prowess. Concert starts at 23.00. more

18, 25 July 2010. Theatre @ Terra presents the play The Jero Plays by Wole Soyinka to mark the 76th birthday of the Nigerian writer, poet, playwright and 1986 Nobel przewinner for literature. The production, directed by Wole Oguntokun, features the satire The Trials of Brother Jero, performed for the first time in 1960, and its sequel Jero’s Metamorphosis, first performed in 1974. Soyinka studied at Government College in Ibadan, Nigeria, and at the University of Leeds. During his six years in England he became a dramatist at London’s Royal Court Theatre. In 1960 he returned to Nigeria to study African drama and teach drama and comparative literature at various universities around the country. He also founded the theatre groups The 1960 Masks and the Orisun Theatre Company, in which he was both actor and producer. In his work Soyinka is deeply influenced by traditional popular African theatre, which combines dance, music and action, as well as by the mythology of his own tribe, the Yoruba. The Musical Society of Nigeria (MUSON) celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Polish composer Frédéric Chopin’s birth with his Concerto in E Minor, Piano and Vocal Works performed by Maria Asseeva and Tosin Ajayi piano and Naomi Otokiti soprano, accompanied by the MUSON Symphony Orchestra. Concert starts at 18.00. more

Prèt-à-Partager: A Transcultural Exchange

5 June-18 July 2010. Ready to Share is a transnational artistic dialogue featuring works by 17 European and African artists on art, fashion, sports, Africa and its diaspora. The participating artists came together in Dakar, Senegal, in November 2008 to take part in a ten-day multimedia and interdisciplinary workshop on fashion, identity, history and movement, producing a variety of artworks in different genres such as photographs, films, videos and sound and room installations. The works on show include an installation by the German artist Friedrich M. Ploch made from objects found on Dakar’s beaches, which reminds us of the fragility of every moment. The German-based Pakistani fashion designer Zille Homma Hamid has used traditional, hand-woven materials from Senegal to produce a coat inspired by the colours of west Africa. The South African performance and video artist Athi-Patra Ruga has reflected on the threat to homosexuals represented by the growing homophobia in west Africa. Multimedia installations by the Cameroonian artist Goddy Leye explore the loss of childhood innocence through human trafficking, prostitution and forced marriage in Africa. This exhibition opened in Dakar in September 2009 before travelling through Africa. more

The African Artists’ Foundation and Nigerian Breweries Plc present the third edition of the annual National Arts Competition, entitled “Chronicles of a Great Nation at 50” on the occasion of independent Nigeria’s Golden Jubilee. Participating artists are invited to express their vision of Nigeria at 50 in a variety of genres including painting, sculpture, photography, video and installation. The competition is open to new entries until 15 June 2010 at 18.00. To participate send an image of your work and a brief description of it to: nigerianbreweriesaaf@gmail.com along with your details. At the end of the competition the works of the winners will be displayed at the African Artists’ Foundation. more

11-17 May 2010. This exhibition by the Nigerian master Tola Wewe features recent unpublished works. Wewe is Nigeria’s most famous living artist and has won numerous local and international recognitions and awards including the top prize in the Guinness Artists’ Competition 2009 after a solo exhibition at the Corningsby Gallery in London. The exhibition opening will see live music, entertainment and public debates on the artist’s work. After showing in Lagos this exhibition will travel to Europe. more
